The Prologue establishes the book’s method. It begins from the fact that experience is already underway and that identity is usually assumed before it is examined. Physics, biology, neuroscience, psychology, artificial intelligence, philosophy, and Advaita Vedānta are then assigned distinct roles so that each can contribute without being made to prove the conclusions of another.
ESSENTIAL
- Experience and knowing are the starting conditions of the inquiry.
- Each discipline must be allowed to establish only what its methods support.
- Dependence does not make a phenomenon unreal, and explanatory success does not automatically establish ultimacy.
- The inquiry eventually turns from what is known toward the empirical knower and then toward the deeper question of the Knower.

The Prologue does not establish Ātman, Brahman, nonduality, or any spiritual conclusion from physics, neuroscience, unusual experience, or gaps in scientific explanation.

What, if anything, remains when every candidate that can become an object of knowledge has been examined?
